چکیده

Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus; up to 80% of deaths in patients with diabetes are closely associated with vascular disease. The ability of the organism to form a collateral network of blood vessels constitutes an important response to vascular occlusive disease and determines to a large part the clinical consequences and severity of tissue ischemia. The development of new vessels is significantly reduced in diabetic patients with coronary or peripheral artery disease.1,2 This probably contributes to the severe course of limb ischemia in diabetic patients, in which peripheral artery disease often results in foot ulceration and lower extremity amputation. Diabetic retinopathy remains one of the major causes of acquired blindness in developed nations. This is true despite the development of laser treatment, which can prevent blindness in the majority of those who develop macular edema or proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The hallmark of diabetic retinopathy is the lack of microvessels in the macula, leading to hypoxia, associated with peripheral retinal neovascularization that may ultimately cause severe vitreous cavity bleeding and/or retinal detachment. The factors that stimulate retinal blood vessel growth have not been fully defined, but there is accumulating evidence that the renin-angiotensin-bradykinin system (RAKS) may be involved in a number of retinal vascular disorders, including retinopathy of prematurity and proliferative diabetic retinopathy3,4 Only a few studies have specifically evaluated the effect of diabetes on angiogenesis in ischemic vascular disease and in the retina. Moreover, the mechanisms by which diabetes could both limit the formation of new blood vessels in most organs and simultaneously induce proliferative diabetic retinopathy remain largely undefined.

Oxidized LDL is Correlated with Urine Albumin in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case-Control Study

Objective: In patients with diabetes mellitus, increased rate of lipoprotein oxidation and oxidative stress have important role in diabetic angiopathy, including nephropathy. We designed a study for comparing the level of Ox-LDL in diabetic patients with Macro-albuminuria, Micro-albuminuria, versus Normo-albuminuric. Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty five patients with type 2 dia...

Peroxynitrite-induced nitration of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase promotes their binding in diabetic angiopathy.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) play crucial roles in diabetic angiopathy. In vivo, however, the following facts remain unknown: whether COX-2 and iNOS bind, how peroxynitrite-induced nitration of COX-2 and iNOS affects their binding if they do bind and what effects of this mechanism contribute to diabetic angiopathy. This study focused on the issues above. D...

The Comparison of Different Risk Factors which Result in Endothelial Damage Leading to Diabetic Microangiopathy

Chronic endothelial damage plays an important role in the development of angiopathy in diabetes mellitus (1). Since diabetic nephropathy is not determined in forty percent of patients with nonregulated type I diabetes mellitus, it is conceived that the role of hyperglycemia in angiopathy development is not very important. In addition to hyperglycemia, factors such as hypertension, hypercholeste...

Ultrasonography of lower limb vascular angiopathy and plaque formation in type 2 diabetes patients and finding its relevance to the carotid atherosclerotic formation

OBJECTIVE One of the major complications of diabetes is blood vessel disease, termed angiopathy, which is characterized by abnormal angiogenesis. The objective of this study was to discuss the characteristics of lower limb vascular angiopathy and plaque formation in type 2 diabetes patients and finding its relevance to the carotid atherosclerotic plaque formation, thus directing the clinical di...

Trends in the Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in Patients with Myocardial Infarction in the South of Iran: 2008 to 2014

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Management of risk factors and the other prevention services in recent years lead to a significant decrease in AMI incidence. However, to examine the success of those strategies to control diabetes, this study aimed to identify the trends in prevalence of diabetes melli...
